When to watermark a PDF
A watermark tells every reader how a document may be used. Common examples are DRAFT on documents that are not final, CONFIDENTIAL on internal reports, SAMPLE on previews you send to clients before payment, and your company name on price lists and proposals to discourage copying.
Tips for a good watermark
- Keep opacity low (15 to 25 percent) so the text underneath stays readable.
- Use a diagonal angle: it covers more of the page and is harder to crop out.
- Long text is automatically reduced so that it fits on the page.
- Red or gray work best on most documents.
The watermark is drawn on top of the page content. It can be removed by someone with a PDF editor, so it is a clear marking rather than strong copy protection.
