How to use the Unlock PDF tool
- Choose the protected PDF.
- Type the password if the file asks for one when it opens.
- Click “Unlock PDF”.
- Download the unprotected copy.
Two kinds of PDF protection
- Open password (user password): the file cannot be opened without it. You must know this password to unlock the file. The tool does not guess or crack passwords.
- Permissions password (owner password): the file opens, but printing, copying or editing is blocked. These restrictions can usually be removed without any password.
Use it responsibly
Only unlock documents that you own or have the right to use, such as your own statements, invoices and forms. Removing protection from documents you are not allowed to change may break copyright or confidentiality rules.
Privacy
Everything runs in your browser. Your files and text are not uploaded to our server or stored anywhere. Protected documents are often sensitive, which is exactly why they should not be uploaded to unknown servers.
Frequently asked questions
Can you unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?
No. For files that need a password to open, you must enter the correct one. Strong PDF encryption cannot be broken in a reasonable time.
What if the PDF opens without a password but I cannot print?
Leave the password field empty and click “Unlock PDF”. Restrictions on printing, copying and editing will be removed.
Is the unlocked file changed in other ways?
No. Pages, text, images and bookmarks stay the same. Only the encryption is removed.
Is my password sent anywhere?
No. Decryption runs in your browser.
