What is M4A?
M4A is an MPEG-4 audio file, usually with AAC audio. It is the default format of Apple Voice Memos and many phone recorders. Quality is good and files are small, but some older players, car radios, upload forms and editing apps accept only MP3.
Best settings
For voice memos, 96 or 128 kbps and mono are enough and keep files small. For music, choose 192 or 256 kbps to keep the sound close to the original.
Protected files
Songs bought from the old iTunes Store with DRM (M4P files) cannot be converted. Normal M4A files without copy protection work fine.
Privacy
Everything runs in your browser: the audio is decoded by your browser and encoded on your device. Your files are never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting reduce quality?
Every lossy conversion loses a little. At 192 kbps or more the difference from the M4A is very hard to hear.
Can I convert on iPhone?
Yes. Open this page in Safari, choose the files from the Files app or Voice Memos (share, Save to Files), convert and download.
How do I convert many files?
Select them together. When they are ready, click “Download all (ZIP)”.
Can I go back from MP3 to M4A?
Not with this tool. MP3 plays everywhere, so there is rarely a need.
