Blur and redact an image

Draw boxes over the private parts of a screenshot or photo, choose a solid box, pixelation or blur, and download a safe copy to send.

Private: works in your browser, nothing is uploaded.

How to use the Blur and Redact Image tool

  1. Choose an image or screenshot.
  2. Pick the effect: black box, pixelate or blur.
  3. Drag over each area you want to hide. Undo if you make a mistake.
  4. Click “Download” and share the safe copy.

Which effect is safest?

  • Black box: completely removes the information. The safest choice for passwords, card numbers, IBANs, ID numbers and QR codes.
  • Pixelate and blur look nicer for faces and licence plates, but strong pixel blocks are needed: light blur on text can sometimes be reversed.

What to hide before sharing

Card and account numbers, passport and ID data, addresses, phone numbers and emails, one-time codes and QR codes, names in chat screenshots, faces of other people and car licence plates.

The downloaded image is a new picture: the hidden pixels are really replaced, not just covered by a layer. Photo metadata such as GPS location is removed as well.

Privacy

Everything runs in your browser. Your files and text are not uploaded to our server or stored anywhere. This is important here: the whole point is that the original never leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone undo the redaction?

Not with the black box: the original pixels are gone. Pixelation and blur replace the pixels too, but use strong settings for text.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. Drag with your finger over the area to hide.

Is the location data removed?

Yes. The new image has no EXIF metadata.

Can I redact a PDF?

Convert the page to an image with PDF to PNG, redact it, then turn it back into a PDF with JPG to PDF.
