MAC address generator and converter

Create valid random MAC addresses in the format you need, and convert any MAC between Linux, Windows and Cisco notation.

How to use the MAC Address Generator tool

  1. Choose how many addresses, the format and the letter case.
  2. Optionally enter a vendor prefix (OUI), such as 52:54:00 for KVM.
  3. Click “Generate” and copy the list. Use the converter below for a single address.

Safe random MAC addresses

A randomly generated MAC is only safe to use if it cannot collide with real hardware. The generator sets the locally administered bit and clears the multicast bit in the first byte, so every address is a valid unicast address from the range reserved for local use. That is the same method hypervisors use for virtual network cards.

If you need addresses that look like a particular platform, enter its prefix. Common ones: 52:54:00 (QEMU/KVM), 00:15:5D (Hyper-V), 00:50:56 (VMware), 02:42 (Docker). Only use a real vendor prefix in labs, never on production networks.

MAC address formats

  • 00:1a:2b:3c:4d:5e: Linux, macOS, most network tools.
  • 00-1A-2B-3C-4D-5E: Windows (ipconfig /all, getmac).
  • 001a.2b3c.4d5e: Cisco IOS (show mac address-table, show arp).
  • 001a2b3c4d5e: plain, used in some databases and APIs.

The converter accepts any of these and shows all of them at once, which saves time when you move between a Cisco switch, a Windows DHCP server and a Linux box.

Frequently asked questions

Are generated MAC addresses unique?

They use 46 random bits, so a collision on one network is extremely unlikely. For large virtual environments, let the hypervisor assign addresses so it can check for duplicates.

Can I use a random MAC on my real network card?

Yes. Most operating systems allow it, and phones do it automatically for Wi-Fi privacy.

What does locally administered mean?

The address was set by software or an administrator rather than burned in by the manufacturer. The second-lowest bit of the first byte is 1.

Is a multicast MAC valid for a device?

No. An interface address must be unicast: the lowest bit of the first byte must be 0. The generator always ensures that.
